Choosing the right network switch makes a big difference to the reliability and performance of your network. This guide explains the key things to compare before you buy.

1. How many ports do you need?

Count the number of devices you need to connect — computers, access points, IP cameras, printers and servers — then leave room to grow. Common sizes are 5, 8, 16, 24 and 48 ports. A 24-port switch is a popular choice for small offices, while larger sites may need several 48-port units.

2. Gigabit vs Fast Ethernet

Most modern networks use Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mbps) ports. Gigabit switches cost a little more than older Fast Ethernet (100 Mbps) switches but give you far better throughput for file transfers, video and access points. For most new installations, choose Gigabit.

3. Do you need PoE?

Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers power and data over one cable, which is ideal for IP cameras, wireless access points and VoIP phones. If you plan to power these devices, a PoE switch removes the need for separate power adapters. Check the PoE budget (in watts) to make sure it can power all your devices.

4. Managed vs unmanaged

  • Unmanaged switches work out of the box and are best for simple, small networks.
  • Managed switches give you VLANs, monitoring, quality of service and other controls — useful for business and ISP networks where you need to segment traffic and troubleshoot.

5. Uplink and SFP ports

Look for SFP or SFP+ uplink ports if you need to connect the switch to other switches over fibre, or to a router at higher speeds. This is common in larger buildings and ISP installations.
