Structured cabling is the copper network infrastructure that connects devices within buildings. A well-planned cabling system makes networks more reliable and easier to manage.

Cable categories

  • Cat5e supports Gigabit Ethernet and is economical for basic installations.
  • Cat6 supports Gigabit and 10 Gigabit over shorter runs, and is the most common choice for new installations.
  • Cat6a supports 10 Gigabit over the full 100-metre channel.

Completing the installation

Beyond cable, you will need RJ45 connectors or keystone jacks, patch panels to terminate cable runs, faceplates at wall outlets and patch cords to connect equipment. Choose solid copper cable for permanent runs rather than copper-clad aluminium.
